Paul Brammer Celebrates 15 Years at Nicholas Associates Group
This month marks a significant milestone for Paul Brammer, Director at Nicholas Associates Group, as he celebrates 15 years with the business. During that time, Paul has played a pivotal role in the growth and evolution of the Group, helping to shape its Specialist Brands division into a collection of respected businesses serving niche markets across the UK. From joining Stafforce Personnel Limited and witnessing its transformation into Nicholas Associates Group, to becoming a Board Director and supporting the growth and development of brands such as Apprentice Employment Agency, Paul has seen the recruitment industry change dramatically. In this Q&A, he reflects on the defining moments of his career, the lessons he’s learned as a leader, and his ambitions for the future of the Specialist Brands.
Looking back over the past 15 years, what have been the defining moments that have shaped both your career and the Specialist Brands division?
Looking back over the past 15 years, one of the defining moments for me personally was being appointed to the Board in 2012. It was a milestone that I am incredibly proud of and gave me the opportunity to play a greater role in shaping the direction of the business.
Another highlight has been helping to develop Apprentice Employment Agency from an initial concept into a recognised and successful brand in its own right. Seeing that journey from idea to established business has been fantastic, forming the very start of the company’s strapline.
Equally important has been the opportunity to work alongside some exceptional people across the company. I have learned a great deal from colleagues over the years, which has helped me develop both professionally and personally.
From a Specialist Brands perspective, the defining theme has been our ability to evolve and adapt. Our specialist recruitment brands have continually responded to changing customer needs, market conditions and industry challenges. We’ve remained agile, embraced change when required and continued to innovate, which has enabled the division to grow and remain relevant throughout that period.
The recruitment landscape has changed dramatically over the last decade and a half. What do you think has been the biggest shift, and how has the business adapted to stay ahead?
Stafforce Personnel Limited was the business I joined, and during this time evolved to Nicholas Associates Group Limited, building a house of brands that are all specialists in their respective markets.
The biggest shift for me during the last 15 years has been the pace of change towards using tech. When I started, traditional advertising and job boards played a bigger role. Today, technology, data, social media, AI, the changing of candidate expectations, and skills shortages have completely transformed the landscape.
Candidates are much better informed and have more choice than ever before. They expect a faster, more personalised experience, while clients increasingly look for specialist knowledge, market insight and strategic talent solutions rather than simply CV supply.
We’ve also seen significant economic events shape the market, from the aftermath of the financial crisis, Brexit, the pandemic and more recent skills shortages. Each of these has required businesses like ours to adapt quickly and rethink how they operate.
One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is the importance of building and maintaining strong relationships. Recruitment remains a people business at its core. Technology can support the process, but long-term success is still built on trust, credibility and understanding the needs of both clients and candidates.

During your time with the Group, how have the Specialist Brands evolved, and what achievements are you most proud of in that journey?
Over the years, the Specialist Brands have changed enormously. The biggest thing for me has been seeing the reputation and awareness of our brands grow. We’ve worked hard to build businesses that are genuinely respected in their markets, and that’s down to the expertise, commitment and passion of the people in those teams.
There have been some real recent highlights along the way. This year, seeing both Nicholas Associates Engineering and Ashley Kate shortlisted in the Recruiter Awards as the best recruitment businesses in their respective sectors was fantastic recognition for the work they do every day.
I’m also really proud of the feedback we continue to receive from clients and candidates through our annual Apprentice Employment Agency surveys. The satisfaction levels are consistently strong and, for me, that’s one of the best measures of success because it reflects the quality of the relationships we’ve built and the service we provide.
It’s been great to see Nicholas Associates Construction continue to thrive in what has been a very challenging construction market, and Graduate Career Solutions has done a brilliant job supporting some fantastic businesses with emerging talent through well-delivered graduate programmes.
But if I’m honest, what I’m most proud of is the team. None of these achievements happens by accident, and none of them happens because of one person. I’ve been lucky to work with some brilliant people over the years, and it’s their hard work, resilience and commitment that have made our Specialist Brands what they are today. That’s probably the thing I’m proudest of.
As a leader, how has your own approach changed over the years? Are there any lessons or experiences that have fundamentally shaped the way you lead today?
I think one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that there isn’t a single leadership style that works for everyone. You have to adapt your approach to the people in your team and understand what brings out the best in each individual. We’re a people business, and our people are our greatest asset.
I’m not sure my leadership style has fundamentally changed over the years. Some of the longer-serving colleagues would probably be better placed to answer that! What I would say is that when I first moved into management, I made a conscious decision to take the best traits from the managers I’d worked for and try to avoid some of the poorer practices I’d experienced earlier in my career.
More than anything, I’ve always believed that if you trust people, support them, give them the tools to succeed, and genuinely care about their development, you’ll get the best out of them. That’s something I’ve tried to stay true to.
Looking ahead, what opportunities excite you most for the Specialist Brands, and where do you see the business in the next five to ten years?
We have some really strong brands, great people and a great reputation in our markets, but there’s still a huge opportunity ahead of us. Our strategy is actually very simple; we want growth. We want every brand to continue growing, winning more market share and becoming the leading specialist in its sector.
Just as importantly, we want to keep doing a brilliant job for our clients and candidates. Recruitment can be a tough industry, but it’s still all about people and relationships. If we continue to deliver for the people who trust us with their careers and their hiring needs, the growth will follow.
After 15 years with Nicholas Associates Group, Paul’s reflections highlight a career built on adaptability, collaboration and a genuine passion for people. While the recruitment landscape has evolved through technological advances, economic uncertainty and changing candidate expectations, his belief in the importance of strong relationships has remained constant. Looking ahead, Paul’s focus is firmly on growth, continuing to strengthen the Group’s Specialist Brands, expand market share and deliver exceptional outcomes for clients and candidates alike. With an experienced team, established brands and a clear strategy for the future, the next chapter promises to be just as exciting as the last.
