Video Interviews: Everything You Need to Know

Video interviews have become a staple in the modern recruitment process. Offering a flexible alternative to traditional in-person interviews, they’re convenient for both employers and candidates. Yet, succeeding in a video interview requires a combination of technical know-how and traditional interview skills. Read on as we explore everything you need to know about video interviews.

Preparing for Your Video Interview

Before the interview, ensure your computer, camera, microphone and internet connection are all working correctly. Use the test meeting feature on the video conferencing tool you’re using or conduct a test call with a friend.

Checklist:

  • Camera: Ensure it’s at eye level.
  • Microphone: Check for clearness and minimal background noise.
  • Internet Connection: Stable and fast.

2. Choose a Suitable Location

It’s important to find an area that is quiet where you won’t be interrupted by others. Natural light is best, but if that’s not possible, use a well-lit location that illuminates your face clearly.

Tips:

  • Background: Keep it clean and professional.
  • Noise: Find a secluded spot to avoid interruptions.

3. Dress the Part

It may be tempting to wear pyjama bottoms but dressing professionally from head to toe can help you get into the right mindset for your interview.

4. Familiarise Yourself with the Platform

Whether it’s Microsoft Teams, Zoom or any other platform, make sure to familiarise yourself with how it works. Ensure you know how to join the meeting, mute/unmute yourself and share your screen if necessary.

During the Interview

1. Be Punctual

Join the meeting a few meetings early, just like you’d turn up to an in-person meeting in good time. This not only demonstrates punctuality but also gives you time to fix any last-minute technical problems.

Looking directly at the camera when speaking, as opposed to the screen, will simulate eye contact. This helps you to better connect with the interviewer.

3. Mind Your Body Language

Sit up straight, smile and use hand gestures naturally. Your body language speaks a thousand words, even through a screen.

4. Speak Clearly and Concisely

When you’re asked questions, ensure your answers are clear and concise. Avoid drifting and stay focused on the nature of the question.

5. Take Notes

It may be useful to keep a notepad handy for any key points you want to jot down or any questions you might want to ask at the end. However, don’t let this distract you from the interview.

After the Interview

1. Send a Thank-You Email

A prompt follow-up email thanking them for their time will reinforce your interest in the role and leave a lasting impression. Mentioning something specific from the interview will make the email personal.

2. Reflect and Improve

Self-reflection can be highly beneficial for the future. Note what went well and areas where you can improve for following interviews.

Conclusion

Although they may seem daunting initially, with the right preparation you can present yourself confidently and professionally through your video interview. By testing your equipment, selecting the right location, and practising your interview skills, you’ll be well on your way to landing that role. All that leaves us with is to wish you good luck!
