Leading Across Generations: Key Insights from Our Humber Business Week Leadership Workshop

Room Setup for the Humber Business Week EventAs part of Humber Business Week, Nicholas Associates Group was proud to partner with T2 – The People Performance People to host an interactive leadership workshop focused on one of today’s most pressing workplace challenges: leading across generations.

With leaders increasingly navigating teams made up of diverse perspectives, expectations and ways of working, the session created a valuable space to explore how those differences can become strengths rather than sources of friction.

Setting the Scene

The event opened with a keynote from T2 CEO Martin Johnson, who explored the realities of managing a multi-generational workforce. Rather than framing generational differences as obstacles, Martin highlighted the opportunities they present – bringing varied experiences, ideas and approaches that, when harnessed effectively, can drive stronger outcomes.

This set the tone for a morning focused not on theory, but on practical leadership in action.

Moving Beyond Stereotypes

Following the keynote, Senior Consultant Rich McCarthy led an interactive workshop titled How to Lead Across Generations Without the Friction. Bringing together leaders from a wide range of organisations, the session quickly evolved into an open and engaging discussion.

What stood out most was the shift in focus. Rather than dwelling on generational labels or stereotypes, participants explored what effective leadership really looks like in practice.

Across the room, a consistent message emerged: success isn’t about managing generations differently – it’s about leading people well.

Cups and Brochures Laid Out on TableKey Themes for Modern Leadership

Four themes came through strongly throughout the workshop discussions:

  • Curiosity – Taking the time to understand individuals, their motivations, and their perspectives
  • Adaptability – Flexing leadership styles to suit different people and situations
  • Communication – Creating clarity, openness and trust through consistent dialogue
  • Self-awareness – Understanding the impact of your own behaviour as a leader

These are not new concepts, but the session reinforced just how critical they are in today’s evolving workplace.

Practical Takeaways

True to the spirit of the event, the workshop focused on delivering simple, practical tools that leaders could take straight back into their day-to-day roles.

Through discussion, shared experiences and real-world examples, attendees explored how to:

  • Navigate differing expectations within teams
  • Build trust across age groups and career stages
  • Create environments where everyone can contribute effectively

The interactive format encouraged honest conversations, making the learning immediately relevant and applicable.

Looking Ahead

The discussions throughout the morning reinforced an important point: the challenge facing organisations isn’t simply managing different generations. It’s developing leaders who can adapt – leaders who can respond to different individuals, different situations, and an ever-changing world of work.

At Nicholas Associates Group, we remain committed to supporting businesses and leaders in building stronger, more effective teams. Events like this are an opportunity to share ideas, challenge assumptions, and continue the conversation around what great leadership looks like today.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us, and to our partners at T2 for helping deliver such an engaging and insightful session.
